Questions

Who Should Attend?

The SHIELD Skin Tech Hackathon is open to anyone with fresh ideas and the desire and drive to create real solutions. Whether you’re a doctor, researcher, developer, designer, engineer, entrepreneur, or you’re just interested in healthy skin, let’s come together and build something!

How Will Teams Will Formed?

Once you are registered, please go to Sparkboard and create a profile. Sparkboard is an online platform where you can post your own idea and build your team, or you can browse other teams and ideas. If you see an idea that is a good fit for your interests and skills, you can join the team with the click of a button. You can comment, communicate, and share on social media. We encourage you to form teams on Sparkboard before the hackathon. If you are unable, there will also be an opportunity to join a team in person on Friday afternoon.

How Many People Can Be In My Team?

You can have up to 5 people in your team.

What Will We Be Making?

You and your team will identify a problem within the topics and challenge areas above, conceptualize a solution to this problem, and create a business plan to bring the solution to market. Solutions can be hardware or software, high tech or low tech. You are not required to create a prototype but are welcome to present one in your 5-minute pitch if you have one.

What will we be pitching?

Teams will have 5 minutes to present a slide deck of their business plan and respond to questions from the panel of judges. Your pitch will be judged on a range of factors including how well the solution solves the problem, feasibility, and how sound your business plan is overall. Presenting a prototype or wireframe is optional. Specific judging criteria and presentation template will be posted closer to the event.

What Do We Win?

The judges have the discretion to name a grand prize winner. The grand prize winners will be awarded $25,000 in funding toward the development of their winning proposal. The funding will be paid out in conjunction with the achievement of pre-determined milestones throughout the course of a year-long partnership with Nestlé Skin Health SHIELD. The grand prize winners will also be given desk space at the SHIELD Center for the duration of a year and will receive mentorship and guidance from the SHIELD staff. Additional prizes in the amounts of $1,000, $2,000, and $5,000 will be awarded to other promising teams, at the judges’ discretion. For more details about the prizes, please read the Terms and Conditions.

Do I Need to Bring My Own Computer?

Yes. You are responsible for bringing your own computer, charger, and any other equipment you may need.

What if i can't make it friday ?

If you already have a team or join a team on Sparkboard beforehand, you should coordinate directly with your team regarding your absence. If you are not able to join a team before the event, then you will need to attend Friday’s Networking and Team Formation session.

Can We Stay and Work Overnight on Friday?

Yes. If you plan to stay overnight, please bring a sleeping bag, pillow, personal effects, and anything else you will need.

Will there be food?

Yes. We will keep you well-fed, so you can focus on being creative. We will serve dinner Friday evening, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Snacks and beverages will be available throughout.
